Sepsis-3 Definitions (2016)
SEPSIS
Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection.
Clinical Criteria Suspected infection + SOFA score ≥ 2 points (or acute change of ≥ 2)
SEPTIC SHOCK
Subset of sepsis with profound circulatory, cellular, and metabolic abnormalities.
Clinical Criteria Vasopressors required for MAP ≥ 65 mmHg
AND Lactate > 2 mmol/L despite adequate fluid resuscitation
AND Lactate > 2 mmol/L despite adequate fluid resuscitation
Mortality: 40–60%
qSOFA (Bedside)
Quick screening — ≥ 2 suggests poor outcome:
1 Respiratory Rate ≥ 22/min
1 Altered Mentation (GCS < 15)
1 Systolic BP ≤ 100 mmHg
